Ashley Judd Points Out the Obvious

April 11, 2011

misinformed musical opinions could be a symptom from a marriage to this guy

We mentioned Ashley Judd’s new memoir last week, and the possible familial smackdown that could follow in the wake of her revelations, as well as Wynonna and Naomi’s take on it in their miniseries that’s about to air. But Complex magazine caught an except of the book that is pissing some folks off:

As far as I’m concerned, most rap and hip-hop music — with it’s rape culture and insanely abusive lyrics and depictions of girls and women as ‘ho’s’ — is the contemporary soundtrack of misogyny.

(I’m going to go out on a limb and guess someone tipped them off to this clip, I can’t imagine 1) that they got a review copy of the book in the mail and 2) everyone in the office raced to read it first.)

Hey, you know what? Sure, hip-hop is a rape culture. And so is rock music. And so is NASCAR culture. And so is the freaking New York Times, remember last month when they published a story victim-blaming a child?  All of America is a rape culture, so all American music is part of that rape culture, there’s nothing special about P. Diddy and Snoop Dogg, and really, if you want to criticize the genre for its violent rhetoric, do some research and pick people who are at least little more apropos. If I wanted to rant about raping white boys in rock music, I’m not going to name-check Maroon 5 while doing it.

Oh how embarrassing for Ashley. We all have ignorant assumptions that can be scratched away to reveal insidious internalized racism, but I try not to publish mine as a well-informed opinion.

She was married to Michael Bolton?

Yes, and at the time I remember feeling unsure as to whether my opinion of her dropped more or less than my opinion of him got raised.

Team Win and Naomi! Bump that Ashley. That bums because I had her back all these years when folks were dissing her because she kept making the same movie over and over again and each time it was worse than the previous.

it’s too bad, cause she has talent, just not the smart decision making skills. Harvard might pump you full of information, but who cares if you don’t know what to do with it!

Well in her defense (re movie choices), she didn’t go to Harvard until 2009 – after she made all those movies.
