Karina Smirnoff Dances for ABC, But Poses for Playboy

April 7, 2011

Karina has already posed for FHM - isn't that the same thing?

Last week I mentioned that Hugh Hefner sure likes to show up in the audience of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars a lot, and now I know why The Hef was there: to court Karina Smirnoff and convince her to pose for Playboy. (Or more accurately, as an act of good faith to seal a deal already made with her, since magazines go to print months in advance.) The news was announced yesterday via his Twitter….which makes it either totally accurate or totally a joke.

I’ve always been a little fascinated with the relationship between the ‘family-friendly’ ABC show and the Playboy Mansion, and I put that term in quotes because I don’t find the network to be particularly friendly to all families. And let’s be real, they are there to make money, so any reputation is constructed around that idea in mind. I also don’t find Playboy to be either the end-all, be-all expert OR enemy of anything related to women and sex, so my fascination is really about these two marketing personas in bed together and how perfectly representative it is of a standard pop culture pseudoparadox. Some people running this story claim that if it’s true she’s on the cover, Karina can consider herself fired from the show, but really? I mean, there’s a contestant this season who is a former Playboy bunny and stripper – and I’m pretty sure she’s not the first one with those items on her resume. On a competing network, Donald Trump has assembled a ragtag group of celebrities to compete to raise money for charity, and one of the contestants is a former Playboy model of the year. Hypocrisy is not new in pop culture representations, I think I’m just watching for everyone else to catch up and put all the pieces together.

Now if Karina was posing for Penthouse or Hustler, THAT would be a story….

At this point the offerings of USA’s old staple “Up All Night with Rhonda” are more tawdry than anything found in the airbrushed pages of Playboy. I’ve always admired how hard Playboy has worked at keeping things “klassy”.

As for Hustler, Penthouse and such, I didn’t realize people posed for those photos so much as got caught in the act and had the act photographed and sold to the highest bidder.
