That Meme You’ve Been Ignoring: Borders says, “No Restrooms. Try Amazon!”

April 5, 2011

Borders employees in Chicago might have lost their jobs, but they haven’t lost their snarky sense of humor. Praise be to Xena we live in the age of smartphones as an eagle eye Consumerist reader named Sam snapped this photo, which keeps popping up on my facebook feed like an ironic whack-a-mole.

Passive aggressive signage isn’t the only thing one observes at a depressing Borders closing sale; there’s nothing there. Oh sure, if you want 200 copies of Grafton’s M is for Malice or postcards depicting sailboats reminiscent of the one hanging over The Simpsons’ couch, you’re in luck. Otherwise, there’s nothing worth the money or the schadenfreude.

In February, the Ann Arbor based bookstore announced it was filing for Chapter 11 and would be shuttering many of its stores. And like the last time a big retailer who fell out of step with customers’ needs I can’t exactly say I was devastated by the news. To be sure, it’s very unfortunate there are about to be more MFAs and English majors competing with me for the few low paying, semi-prestigious non profit gigs. That said, I had soured on Borders some time ago.

In any event, thanks to this photo, which is viral like you wouldn’t believe, Borders might not have won this war, but at least they went down snarking.

If Borders management had ever shown this much life in the past…
