Benicio Del Toro Does Right by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry

Pop music news has been dominated today by Justin Bieber’s haircut and Kanye tossing off words half-assed on Twitter (again), so I was grateful to find good news you can use: the film on Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry is premiering next month. The Upsetter: The Life & Music of Lee “Scratch” Perry will start off in Los Angeles on March 25, then travel around the country a bit to select arthouses, and then, if we’re lucky, in three months they will have already struck a deal with Netflix Instant.  The film is narrated by Benicio Del Toro, a reported ‘fanatic’ of the music of Perry. According to The Hollywood Reporter (of course) article, the director found out this piece of information from Ryan Phillipe, who was himself turned onto the reggae musician’s catalog by Del Toro when they filmed a movie together (presumably they mean 2000’s The Way of the Gun, which I forgot existed).

But the best part of this news is that Perry himself approves of the final project. “This is my movie and this is the truth.

      I’m hoping Kiki will go in on a van with me and we’ll hit the road, follow the movie around, selling embroidery floss knotted friendship bracelets and friendship bead safety pins for shoes to make gas money, and we’ll become the favored groupies.

      Oh wait, Benicio isn’t touring with it in person? Never mind.
