Stanley v. Sid – The Skins Recap

[This post is brought to you by:  lemonadeandlemoncake.  If you missed them, weeks one, two, three, and four are recapped as well.]

I’ve been waiting for this episode since January – very curious to see how Stanley measured up to Sid. I miss the British parent actors (Peter Capaldi, specifically) because the American ones (and yes, this is American even though it’s been filmed in Toronto) simply don’t measure up. Today isn’t a great day for Stanley. Turns out, ditching class doesn’t work out very well in the long run, and if he misses one more class, he will be doomed to repeat his junior year of school. Darn sleeping habits!

We all have those days where we fall asleep directly after we punch the alarm. This was Stan. His dad was smart, though, and instead of gently rubbing his back to wake him up, entered his room with a blaring trumpet, not stopping to his son’s screams of ‘WHY?!?! WHY!??!’ I expected the shower scene to be dramatic given the previews, but he merely falls asleep in the shower and misses the bus. The best idea after that is to steal his dad’s car, but he’s still late to class.

His friends cover for him though, telling the teacher, Dave, a long story about how they were offered weed at a party and what should they do to combat the peer pressure? Stan manages to save his academic career, but later that night is invited to Tony’s choir concert and steals the car – again. If you watched the British Skins (which you should have), you know what happens. Tony cheats on Michelle on stage and a nice cat fight takes place backstage.

The cussing is much preferred in the British one. ‘Blow a horse’? So tame. The police catch Stanley later, and to make it worse, his dad’s car catches on fire. His dad decides to charge him with grand theft auto, and for a moment there I’m actually scared Stan is going to jail. Nope – the judge has unrealistic mercy. I enjoyed the ‘fix it’ scene even though I couldn’t understand why Stan’s mom left. Next week, we go to Canada!

I have never seen the British version and started watching this show purely to blog about the child pornography controversy. I think it’s a lot better than people give it credit for. The two weeks prior to this one were boring and horrible, but this one hit a little closer to home and I think the show is slowly finding itself.

The rest of my thoughts on the episode here: http://imagemoved.wordpress.com/2011/02/15/skins-gets-it-right/

Yes, seriously you might change your mind if you watch the original British version, uncensored on DVDs. Also Britain seems to have different views of what is considered child porn and what isn’t. On this show they will show 17 year old’s asses or breasts. The famous Nicholas Hoult and Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) both have shown their asses in episodes.

With a name like “Skins”, when are we going to see some young boy-on-boy action that will alarm the censors?
