Amber Riley Goes Through the Fire

February 3, 2011

Amber Riley channels Chaka Khan for Essence Magazine

It must be February because suddenly mainstream media outfits are hip to the black cast member on Glee. I’m pretty sure I haven’t come across an article on EW solely devoted to Amber Riley or Essence, but EW has made up for lost time by featuring both in the same forced, fauxgressive, back patting article. It’s painful actually. How are you gonna talk about Essence without bothering to you know, link to the main site. One sequined dress and a big voice do not a Chaka knock off make. Not that Riley isn’t killing that sequin dress. But Essence is totally campaigning for a Chaka centric episode of the tired Fox musical comedy. Y’all realize Prince owns the rights to “I Feel For You”, right? So, you know, good luck with that. Amber Riley struts her Chakawannabe self on the cover of Essence.

The picture is great, altho the background is leaving me with a ? over my head. But she looks great. Have they had her sing any songs from Dreamgirls yet?

with a bit of sadness yet unsurprisedness I note it looks a bit shopped, though Miss Riley is one fierce woman.

I don’t know when this picture was taken but it looks as though they shopped on an hourglass figure on this otherwise apple shaped lovely lady.

February is the month we white people congratulate ourselves on keeping tokenism alive.
