The ‘Meh’ Fashion of the SAG Red Carpet

January 31, 2011

Why is everyone else frantically crafting their best and worst dressed lists from yet another kudocast where all the starlets played it safe in bland, pretty dresses in obligatory fabrics made by obvious award gown designers? Jewels by Lorraine Schwartz? Really? I’m shocked! A cheeky bag in rhinestones by Judith Leiber? You don’t say? Other than Helena Bonham Carter who does her own thing and isn’t obsessed with looking tidy, pretty and lacquered over, most of these dresses aren’t memorable enough to easily sort themselves into best/worst categories. What did you think of award season fashion thus far. Any stand out gowns or looks?

Angie Harmon, star of TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles, arrived to the award show fresh from her new gig standing on top of a giant wedding cake. Angie’s Monique Lhuillier gown is reminiscent of SJP’s Emmy dress some years back. Okay, if she took SJP’s dress and hot glued a billion fur boas to it. I actually love this dress, but wonder how many feathers were still left on the gown once the night was over. That looks like the kind of dress that’s a gift that keeps on giving.

Christina Hendricks is normally so well styled that I can only assume she bravely arrived at the awards ceremony in her bathrobe because someone stole the dress she intended to wear. The L’wren Scott dress looked great in other head on snaps, with its black sparkle motion, but from the side it looks like something Norma Desmond or Auntie Mame would wear while confined to their boudoirs drinking booze and feeling sorry for themselves.

Melissa Leo is doing everything possible to distinguish herself from the memorable character she played in The Fighter. And while this dress is a worthy effort, it seems a bit too Vegas for the former Det. Kay Howard. Still, the silver is a great choice, but there’s just a lot going on with the gown. This also might be another one of those gowns – like Christina Hendricks – that doesn’t photograph as nicely as it looks in person.

Natalie Portman keeps racking up the awards for her performance in Black Swan and these simple dresses that everyone makes a fuss over because she looks gorgeous while being pregnant. This latest dress, out of all her award show fashions, most resembles the look of a wrapping a white bedsheet around one’s body as seen in countless films. I think her Golden Globe dress was a lot more interesting than this number. If anything, this forgettable frock demonstrates that Portman can look good in a laundry sack, which might be the look she was going for.

Kudocast! Aw thanks, now I’m singing “Electrifying, granolafying, simply nutritious, outrageously delicious, Kudos! I’M YOURS!”

They were so novel! Now there’s an entire aisle of candy-bars-masquerading-as-health-food, but kudos to Kudos for pioneering the field.

deadline.com deserves all the kudos for introducing me to the word kudocast. I can’t stop using it. It is simply the most perfect word ever.

I’ve seen college co-eds exiting a dorm after a 3am fire alarm styled in a similar manner as Portman.

like something Norma Desmond or Auntie Mame would wear while confined to their boudoirs drinking booze and feeling sorry for themselves.

You just summed up my goal for my later years.

Also, Kudos were the best snack ever. And I’d totally forgotten about them, too!

I kinda like the dress Mila Kunis wore, but it doesn’t say “Awards season attire” to me. Frankly, I think the most interesting thing in any of the pictures above is Winona Ryder’s facial expression.

I like Mila’s dress a lot. I think she’s making some great fashion choices. She picks dresses that don’t overwhelm her. Yeah, I don’t know if Noni still knows how to be famous anymore.

Portman looks like something out of I, Claudius in that pic.
