Welcome to the Family, Geri Jewell

January 28, 2011

The Daily Mail reports that actress Geri Jewell – that’s Geri Jewell, not Geri Halliwell the former Spice Girl, as I first thought the headline read – comes out as a lesbian in her autobiography that is soon to be released, I’m Walking As Straight As I Can: Transcending Disability in Hollywood and Beyond.  Jewell is remembered by many for her Facts of Life role as Blair’s cousin Geri who would come to hang out periodically, though fans of Deadwood know (and love) her as the character Jewell, one of the few characters who could go toe-to-toe with Al Swearengen (MCSHANE!).  I just realized that’s two instances of the Danza Rule in her career, but hey, it happens.  Geri Jewell was the first actor with a disability to have a recurring role on a prime time series with the 80s sitcom , and her book will discuss living with cerebral palsy, along with overcoming money woes, drugs, and life-altering accidents, i.e. all the usual tropes of a life that passes through Hollywood, so the part about her being a big homo is actually a happier part of the press release.

The book comes out April 1.

What I loved about Geri’s role on Deadwood was it was one first where her presence was not an object lesson. I always hated that about her brief appearances on Facts of Life.

Agreed on both counts. It makes me want to watch Deadwood again, where there were several complex characterizations that weren’t Life Lessons For Viewers About Others.

Agreed. It makes me mad that the news reports are listing her Facts of Life credit over Deadwood!

(Though I did kinda like that t-shirt she wore that said “I don’t have cerebral palsy, I’m drunk.”)

Looking forward to this! It’s so rare to see disabled actors enjoying this kind of success and I’m curious to read about her experiences navigating Hollywoodland.

Geri probably has her some stories about the lesbionics going on at Eastman Academy.
