Michael Rapaport Asks, ‘Can I kick it?’ Tribe Responds, ‘No, you can’t!’

January 24, 2011

Actor/Director Michael Rapaport (Zebrahead) arrives at Sundance awash in controversy! As early as last month, signs indicated all was not clever in El Segundo, with A Tribe Called Quest’s lead MC taking to twitter to air his beefs with the film.!/QtipTheAbstract/status/10437515970355200

QTip later clarified his terse tweet:

I’m a producer on this film; Tribe is a producer on this film,” he said. “When I speak, I’m speaking for the whole group. A lot of people think I’m speaking individually, even though I addressed it as ‘I’m not supporting’ it. In reality, as producers, there’s just different things that need to be done, edit-wise. The sentiment of the film is there. We feel like it’s 80 percent there. It’s just not there [all the way].

Apparently, Rapaport never got to 100% because at the premiere of the documentary members were a no-show except for Phife!:

“The last time I was with Q-Tip, he was fawning over the movie, [saying] ‘I love the movie. I think it could do this, I think it could do that.’ His feeling about the movie was even higher than my feelings about the movie. It’s disappointing that the rest of the group isn’t here,” he said of the Saturday premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, which was only attended by Tribe member Phife Dawg, with no sign of Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad or Jarobi White.

When was that, Michael? In Neverary? Careful, Michael, I love you! Don’t make Black Folks snatch up your honorary black card and give it to Clooney who’s been eyeing your slot for years.

I wonder if he’s anything like the fun loving criminal he played on My Name is Earl?

It’s so funny that you say Rapaport has an HBC, because I didn’t know about this documentary at all, but I always felt that way about him! I wonder what the whole story is about this film ….

Rapaport wasn’t so smart to even step into the ring on this one, as I’m pretty sure every collaboration anyone has ever had with Q-Tip eventually ended in him taking his ball and going home.

It’s true–the longer he’s in public life, the more he wears out the general affection that nearly everyone had.

      Begin the head shaking!

    HAHA. Quoted for Truth.

    Q-Tip, sharing is caring.

If his Black Card gets pulled then there truly is no hope for the rest of us. Maybe Wu-Tang needs a biographer.

After reading the piece about Phife taking up the mic at Sundance and telling his side of the story, I have to say I think that Q-Tip is kinda trippin.

Phife – the last I checked, which was, granted, a few years ago – seems to have his head on right and is making a decent living as an independent musician that capitalizes on his talents as an MC and his past success with Tribe, while creating something new on his own. I would lean towards his assessment of the situation.
